Social Justice Event: Hidden Figures As I scrolled througout the list of the Social Justice Events I could attend, I was excited to find that the movie "Hidden Figures" on the list. I have not had the opportunity to watch this movie until this morning. Hidden Figures tells the story of a group of African American women who helped get the first ship into space. The money is told through the three main characters, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson all of which played a key role in launching the first space ship. The Movie opens displaying a classroom, in which you find out is a gifted school for 6th graders and above. Katherine is just eight years old. This is a small scene but extremely important, as there would be gifted schools for white children. Katherine is able to solve an algebraic problem at just 8 years old, proving how smart she is. The movie then jumps to when Katherine and two of her coworkers are stopped on the side of the road b...

Special Education in Schools I feel that Special Education in schools is a necessity in order to help kids grow and learn that may be developmentally younger than their age or have been diagnosed with diseases and conditions that may restrict their function. During high school, I met a student who was diagnosed with Down syndrome. He was one of the kindest and sweetest students who never forgot your name and always loved to played to basketball. One day, I arrived into the gym for batting practice with my softball team and he was standing in the middle of the court not ready to leave. He was not purposely refusing to leave as he wanted to go against what his teacher was asking him to do. Instead he just did not want his basketball practice to end, you could tell he was frustrated that he had to leave. I felt bad, because I wanted to help him but had no idea. I walked over to him and started talking to him. First I asked if he knew who I was and he smiled at the ground and said ...

Separate but Unequal

Image
Almost 75 years ago one of the most famous civil rights cases was marked a turning point in history as it overturned the long standing case of Plessy vs. Ferguson. In 1896, Plessy vs. Ferguson established the "Separate but Equal" which would be used for the next 55 years as an excuse to discriminate and separate races from each other. In the case of Brown vs. Board of Education, which overturned the "Separate but Equal" term proved that the standing of society was in fact separate but unequal. Although no expected an over night change, progression towards integration was expected, yet there was rallies against it. Over the course of the next 68 years, there is still a present struggle of integration of schools. However there is a strong difference between the integration struggles that exist today and the past. Although there is no separate bathrooms, water fountains or restaurants, our history of segregation effects the young children of today. During the int...

Service Learning - Kahne and Westheimer

The Politcis of Service Learning Throughout life, everyone experiences the oppuruntity to participate in service learning projects. Yet, each person takes away something different. Kahne and Wesheimer explain both of these instances in the different classrooms of Adams and Johnson. Adam's Classroom In the case of Ms. Adams middle school classroom, they researched to understand the issue at hand and how to fix it. Although they never stepped foot into the scene and experience the homeless first hand, they had the information and to address the problem, Johnson's Classroom The students of Ms. Johnsons class stepped into the scene and experienced serving others first hand. The assignment included choosing their own serving project, eventhough, there may not be a connection between these students are seeing the problems each in there own way. Change vs. Charity Yet when the arguement of Change vs. Charity comes into play, charity can be described as a short term additiv...

Creating Safe Places for Everyone Personal Connection One morning, I was walking towards my first period science class and as I turn the corner I see my best friend, Kristen. I call her name and try to get her attention but she doesn't respond. I try and catch up to her but she kept her head down and kept on walking, so I tried to call her name again. Suddenly, she turns around and says, "Reilly I can not talk right now", I could see the tears fill up in her eyes. Kristen has been my best friend since the first day of kindergarten, and I have seen her cry four times. I promise you, she naturally does not cry unless she is really upset, so when I saw the tears fill her eyes, I instantly knew something was wrong. I pulled her into a side hallway and she blurted out, "my parents are getting divorced".  I have grown up with divorced parents since the age of four, and it has almost been a normal thing for me, so I was ready to help my best friend through the...
